About the event

  • What are the London 2016 LEN European Aquatics Championships?

Staged every two years, the LEN European Aquatics Championships is the third biggest event in aquatics after the Olympics and World Championships. More than 900 elite athletes from 50 European nations and 5,000 masters athletes will be competing in the event, which will be the final opportunity for people to come and see Britain and Europe's best swimmers, divers and synchronised swimmers before Rio 2016.

  • Who takes part in the European Aquatics Championships?

More than 900 athletes from 50 European nations will be competing in the elite event, which will be the final opportunity for people to come and see Britain and Europe's best swimmers, divers and synchronised swimmers before Rio 2016.

  • Why is the European Aquatics Championships so important?

Staged every two years, the European Aquatics Championships is the third biggest event in aquatics after the Olympics and World Championships. More than 900 elite from 50 European nations and 5,000 masters athletes will be competing in the event, which will be the last time Britain's and Europe's best swimmers, divers and synchronised swimmers will compete before Rio 2016.

Last held in London in 1938, the European Aquatics Championships brings elite sport back to East London, further supporting London’s position as the world’s No.1 sporting city.

  • Why are the European Aquatics Championships taking place at the London Aquatics Centre?

London won the bid to host this event three years ago. The world-class facilities at the London Aquatics Centre make the venue the ideal choice for the prestigious Championships.

Part of the legacy from London 2012 was that the Olympic venues continued to be used once the games had finished. Today, the London Aquatics Centre is fulfilling its legacy through offering affordable public swimming and fitness facilities to all ages and abilities as well as staging elite sports events to further support London’s position as the world’s No.1 sporting city.

  • Will the London Aquatics Centre hold future European Aquatics Championships?

The Championships are held at different locations across different European countries every two years. Currently there are no plans for this event to take place for a second time in the London Aquatics Centre. The 2018 LEN European Aquatics Championships will be hosted in Glasgow.

  • Is Tom Daley competing in the event?

Yes. It’s expected Tom Daley will compete during the European Aquatics Championships.

The European Aquatics Championships is a unique event and our world-class facilities made it the ideal venue for the Championships. We currently have no other events planned that would mean all of the facilities at the London Aquatics Centre to be closed for more than a few days.

However, part of our London 2012 legacy commitments is to offer affordable public swimming and fitness facilities as well as staging elite sports events and community events. We will always do our best to ensure minimal disruption to you and give you as much notice as we can if the facilities will be closed.

Lessons and Courses questions

  • Can I still get access to swimming pools outside my lessons?

If you are a Swim School customer who pays by direct debit you will automatically have access to Better leisure centres within the same partnership. This includes access to Better swimming pools during casual swimming times, so you can continue to practice your skills.

  • When will Swimming and diving lessons start again?

Normal swimming and diving lessons will resume from week commencing Monday 6th June.

  • Why aren’t swimming/diving lessons being moved to another Better leisure centre?

We did explore the option to move all of our swimming and diving lesson customers into another Better centrr. However, due to the number of people subscribed to our swimming and diving lessons, there unfortunately wasn’t another Better leisure centre that could accommodate all of our customers.

  • What happens to my lessons and courses direct debit payments?

As swimming and diving lesson have been frozen during May, no payment will be taken on or around 1st May.

Your June direct debit will be taken as normal. However, this will be reduced to compensate people for the lesson they are missing in the first week of June and for any customers who will also miss their lesson on Sunday 1st May.
